Joel Eugenio Epistola Ferraris appreciates art and art-making not only because of their aesthetic values but also for their potential to become tools to inspire and help bring spiritual enlightenment to people, especially the young. Using diverse subjects, themes and innovative styles, Joel aims to express his inner feelings and thoughts on various factors affecting humanity, using appropriate techniques that could most effectively portray them.
As an artist, Joel believes in the critical responsibility of gifted people to balance their lives – guided by good morals resting on a strong spiritual foundation. He is convinced that art can provoke a deep reflection on one’s spirituality and purpose in life.
The eldest of five children in a family of artists, Joel has competed and won in various art contests, even pitting himself against – and occasionally losing to – his three brothers and only sister. Neophyte, one of his recent paintings, was among the Top 30 Finalists in the prestigious 2004 Sovereign Asian Art Prize.
Born in Iloilo City, Joel started a trailblazing career in art that inspired his siblings. In 1993, his 100-foot-long anti-Aids campaign mural, Armor of God, commissioned by GUESS? USA was unveiled by celebrity and supermodel Anna Nicole Smith and then Philippine Health Secretary Juan Flavier. This was followed by his involvement with the Hong Kong Mural Society in making more than 60 murals around Hong Kong since 1998, including the city’s longest mural on Tsing Yi Island.
Aside from numerous group exhibitions with his siblings in the Philippines and overseas, Joel had two solo shows. Given his wide-ranging and innovative works, Joel has been featured in several radio and TV programmes, such as Tatak Pilipino, in 1993; Filipino Hour on TicTV.com, in 2006; and CNN International Asia’s This Day, with James Lee as host, in 1997.
Joel is currently represented by the John Batten Gallery in Hong Kong, and he continues to do murals under his own company, Ferraris Art Studio. He also conducts mural-painting workshops for the Hong Kong Mural Society. His latest works are 6 sculpture sets as interactive pieces of public art for SM Sky Garden, SM North Edsa, Quezon City, Philippines.
